Diplomacy should be based on Taiwan’s interest and political ethics.

Ma Ying-jeou promised quite a few projects in his visit to Central and South America. In response to press questions, Ma said that the new president can stop them after 20th May if she doesn’t think those were good ideas.

Foreign relations and diplomacy should be non-partisan. If a project is good, the incumbent should inform the president elect first and if s/he doesn’t find it suitable, the outgoing president shouldn’t make any promise. This is for Taiwan’s interest and also in line with political ethics. It doesn’t make sense to make promises first and ask his successor to break them, as this will affect trust and diplomatic relations.

‘Ma Ying-jeou made promises to those countries he visited without discussing with president elect first’
