Lee Teng-hui said that when he was doing his military service, Taiwan and Japan were the same country and that he and his brother were fighting for, not against Japan. This was a factual experience for his generation. However, Lee was a president for 12 years and is still receiving state benefits and protection. Therefore, whether Lee should be considerate about the feelings of those with different historical experience, especially those who have been victimised by Japan in Mainland China, can be discussed.
However, Ma Ying-jeou, a current president, disregarded the different historical experiences between Taiwan and Mainland China and insisted on expanding the memorial for the anti-Japan war also hurt the feelings of the older generations in Taiwan.
Leaders of Taiwan in the new era should have the wisdom of mutualism, tolerate different historical experiences and bring Taiwanese together rather than aggressively dividing and tearing apart the society.
‘Whether former president w state benefit & protection should talk abt experience that may hurt some ppl’s feeling can be discussed’
‘But Ma current president disregard diff hist exp of TW & commemorate anti-Japan war hurt feeling of older Taiwanese 2’
‘Leader of new era should have wisdom for mutualism and bring Taiwanese together, not aggressively dividing society’
